Up to Hella - how can I join in?
Participating is easy. Here are a few very simple rules:
* * * * * * * *
To make it more fun, identify some stages on your route to Hella, using google maps, or similar (eg, if you live in Doncaster and have achieved your first 56 km you would find yourself in York, and then it is only another 136 km to Newcastle...). Will you make it to Up Helly Aa by the end of January? - And then comes the long sea road...
* * * * * * * *
Obviously, it is a bit harder to come from the south compared to those, already starting in Shetland. So, riders should join together as a group. The ridden kms of every rider are then added together to a group total Forming a group can be done at any time until 15th June 2014. Maximum number of riders per group is 10. Every group must have a name, and no rider may be a member of more than one group.
* * * * * * * *
Note: this event is not a race, but rather focus on our own achievement - and that of your group - with every step you take. It is the ride that matters! Then we can all be champions!
- Register here. You can choose a nickname for yourself (or your horse) by which you want to be listed.
- Use luftlinie.org to find the total distance between your home and Hella.
- Starting on 16th Nov 2013, keep a record of every km (!) that you ride out on one (or any) of your Icelandic horses, and send a regular update to [email protected] or use the update form - here.
- If you ride with one (or more) handhorse(s), the following applies: each handhorse counts for half the distance again, so if you ride 10 km, plus taking a hand horse you can submit 15km, with two handhorses it would be 20km, etc.
- At the beginning of every calendar month your progress will be updated here. Of course, all kms ridden in endurance rides, TREC or similar events count, and your distance does not need to be verified - every ridden km gets you closer to Iceland!
